Maternal exposure to childhood infections during adulthood does not protect against atopic diseases

It has been hypothesized that exposure to infections may protect against development of atopic diseases.

Danish researchers studied the incidence of wheezing and atopic dermatitis (AD) in infants of mothers employed in child-care institutions. The study results did not show protection against atopic diseases from maternal microbial exposure before or during pregnancy in offspring infants.
